FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A few things you may want to know before getting started.

Is Household Saga for couples?

Yes. Household Saga is designed for people who want to manage a household together without necessarily combining all of their personal finances. It is especially useful for couples, but it also works for families, roommates, and other households. Learn more about using Household Saga as a couple.

Can we keep our personal finances separate?

Yes. Personal finances and household finances are kept separate. You can participate in a household without giving other members access to your personal financial information.

Do we need to combine our bank accounts?

No. Household Saga does not require you to combine your personal finances. You can keep your personal accounts and expenses separate while managing shared household expenses together.

How are household expenses split?

Household expenses use an equal split by default. You can override the split for individual expenses when a different arrangement makes more sense.

Can I belong to more than one household?

Yes. You can create or join multiple households. Each household has its own shared finances, while your personal finances remain separate.

Can I create budgets for both personal and household expenses?

Yes. Budgets can be created for personal and household categories and can use weekly, monthly, or yearly periods.

Can I create recurring expenses and income?

Yes. Both expenses and income can be recorded as one-time or recurring transactions.

How do settlements work?

You can enable settlements for a household on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. Settlements summarize shared expenses and balances so household members can reconcile what is owed.

Can I track credit card expenses?

Yes. Payment accounts can be configured for credit so expenses can be accounted for when they are incurred while also reflecting when the payment actually happens.

Can I import transactions from my bank?

Yes. CSV transaction files can be parsed securely in your browser. An optional AI helper can also parse XLSX and PDF statements and turn their transactions into expenses and income.

Does Household Saga use AI?

AI is optional and is used to assist with tasks such as parsing financial statements. Core financial calculations - including budgets, expense splits, balances, and settlements - are handled by the application using deterministic rules.

How does Household Saga handle privacy?

Personal and household finances are kept separate. Being part of a household does not give other members access to your personal financial information.
